Master Splinter

Hey there everyone! I did this for planet pulp. This month's theme is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Have to love the turtles, but I wanted to do a piece devoted to Splinter. Hope you like it.

CTN Animation Expo

Hey everyone! The animation expo was amazing. I was able to rub shoulders with some of my heroes in the animation world and get some really good advice on how I ought to proceed from where I'm at to get to where I want to be and what I want to be doing.

I was able to speak with representatives from Laika, Disney, Sony, Blue Sky, Dreamworks, Riot Games, and a few others and got some very specific and consistent feedback. The consistency of the feedback I received was astounding to me. Almost every person I talked to said the exact same things to me.

Overall, people seemed impressed with my skills as a draftsman and character designer. The critiques I received were to include more rough sketches and looser drawings in my portfolio and to demonstrate a wider range of styles.

At BYU-Idaho where I'm currently studying, the entire illustration department is focused on developing portfolios to find work in publishing. I went to CTNX with what I thought was a fairly good portfolio with nice, clean, polished illustrations and drawings in a consistent style. It was a little bit of a shock to me to find out that that isn't what people want when they're looking for character designers.

Anyway, if anyone has any questions about my experience, just drop me a line and I'll get back to you. Here's a look at some of the swag I got while I was there:

I didn't have the money to buy this, but I really wish I did. It's one of Brittney Lee's fantastically gorgeous cut paper pieces that she was selling at her booth for $150. My gut was screaming at me when I passed it up:

Hey everyone!

I'm writing this from the Marriott hotel in Burbank, CA while I wait for the CTN animation expo to start! WOOHOO!

I've been looking forward to this for so long, it's crazy that it's here now. Now for three full days of hocking my portfolio around to anyone and everyone who will look at it.

Tomorrow I have two interviews with recruiters, so wish me luck! I'm going to try to keep things updated every night so check back!

Moby Dick

Hey everybody! I did this little piece thinking of the story of Moby Dick. I've always associated the relationship between Captain Ahab and Moby Dick as more of a romance than anything and so I did a painting with Moby Dick as a girl rather than a whale. Hope that makes sense.

Aurech Redesign

Hi everyone!
Things have been CRAZY busy lately, but today I finally got the chance to sit and do some doodling for Monomyth. I don't know how many of you remember Aurech, the frost giant character from the Monomyth graphic novel a friend and I are working on, but I decided to redesign his head.

I recently designed the main villain for the project and found that the overall shape I had for Aurech's head worked better on the villain. Anyway, here's what I came up with:

I started trying to make him look more bestial, but found that the more monstery I made him, the more his design drifted away from his personality. Finally I decided to kind of model him after a cat. I think this design fits his personality much better and makes him feel more sympathetic. What do you think?
