My Dream Job

It's been a terribly long time. I've decided to make this blog more of a place to actually blog than to share images which is why it's been forever since I've posted anything. If you want to follow my work, the best place to do it is my Facebook page:

Anyway, without further adieu, here's a blog post!

Okay, so after going to CTNX this past weekend my mind has just been reeling with what the future might hold for me and my career and I decided that tonight I just wanted to barf a bunch of words at whoever will read them. Forgive me if this turns out to make no sense at all. I'm just trying to work out a few things in my head.

I've been working as a freelancer for the past few years which has been great, but I've been starving for a more collaborative atmosphere. Being around all the amazing people over the weekend, (including a lot of you), helped to reinforce a feeling I've had for a while...

I think it might be time for a studio job.

One of the many perks of working as a freelancer has been to pick and choose the jobs I take or don't take. I've been fortunate to work on some really fun projects as well as some that I've wished I hadn't taken. The biggest issue I run into is the lack of creative company.

One of the coolest things about college for me was being in classes with other super-nerdy-crazy-art people. The atmosphere was just so exciting and infectious that I couldn't help but want to produce awesome stuff. It would be really nice to work in that kind of atmosphere all the time. As it is I sit alone at my desk all day working on whatever project happens to be on top of the stack. I still get to flex some creative muscles, but there's always this longing to work on something that really matters, you know? The whole reason that I've wanted to work in the entertainment industry my whole life is to get people to feel things. I want to make people cry when they see something I've done.

Anyway, enough moping.

Working on Monomyth for the past few years has been a great way for me to release some of the tension that I get built up. My friend Mack and I have been working on this crazy awesome story for 5 years now and I still get excited thinking about how awesome it could be with the right team of people involved! Lately we've been slowly dipping our toes into the role of producer and seeing what I can get done with the very limited resources we have at our disposal. If you haven't seen what has come of it you should take a look at the Monomyth fan page. The response to us reaching out for help has been phenomenal and I want to thank all of you for being such incredible fans and people!

After art directing this thing for a little while, I find myself obsessed with the idea of running my own studio. I want to make my own movies! I want to decide what gets put in front of people at the theater, you know? There's nothing greater than watching an amazing movie, or reading an amazing book, or listening to amazing music for the first time. It's such a thrill! And I want to give that to people.

I just don't know how to go about it is all. Anyway, thanks for letting me ramble, guys. It's been so great to know that people like what I do! It means a lot. Feel free to share your thoughts on the virtues or vices of working in a studio verses working as a freelancer. I love hearing what you have to say.

If you missed the link to the Monomyth page, here it is:

Thanks again. You are all the best!

Behold, the mighty conqueror!

Tuesday, June 3, 2014

This is an illustration I did a little while ago for a Sketch Dailies challenge. The challenge was to draw an archangel character. I had fun with this one. I don't draw dragons nearly enough!

Hulk and the Hammer

Hey everyone! This is for Planet Pulp's June theme which is muscle bound freaks... Hulk has always been fun to draw. I hope you like it!

More Monomyth

Hey everyone! Bringing this project to life is crawling closer and closer to a reality... Mack and I are in the process of putting polish on a script for an animated short that we'll start producing soon. In the meantime, here's another taste of one of our main characters...

Personal Project Away!

Hello everyone! Some of you may remember the project I've been working on for a few years with a friend of mine. We've finally picked it back up again so here are a couple characters I've put some more work into... I hope you approve!

Here's today's Sketch Dailies doodle... Merlin! This one was kind of fun. I'm majorly inclined to draw dudes with beards. And bald people for that matter. And glowing eyes... So today's sketch challenge was perfect for me! I hope you like it.

Hey guys, I'd like to apologize for being so silent here on the blog. I've been devoting most of my time to updating my Facebook page and have let things slip a bit here. I'm sorry.

Anyway, I'm going to just dump a bunch of images in this post in case you've missed them... Cheers!

Crowd Funding for Artists!

Hey everyone! I listened to a Chris Oatley podcast today about a website called Patreon that's set up to help fans support artists. It's a phenomenal idea. It's a great way to show your support for artists who are trying to make a living doing what they love.

It's a lot like kickstarter, but instead of helping people achieve one large goal, it helps them to achieve smaller ones. As an artist it can be hard to find ways to make money and as a fan it can be hard to show the artists you admire your support without spending a ludicrous amount of money. On Patreon, you pledge to pay a certain amount once a month or every time the artist releases new content. If you don't want to pay more than a certain amount you can put a cap on your donations.

Artists have the option to post goals that they want to achieve and keep their Patreon patrons updated as they achieve those goals. The goals can be anything from wanting to remove ads on your site to buying new recording equipment for the band.

The artists also have the option to give rewards to their patrons. For example, when I set up my page I included rewards like monthly live streams, google hangout sessions, wallpapers, prints, etc.

It's awesome that there are opportunities to be and stay connected to artists and fans. Spread the word! Patreon is awesome!

Here's my patreon page.

Batgirl Redesign

Hey everyone! Project: Rooftop is doing a "Draw Batgirl" event right now and it's been the most fun of all the projects I've participated in so far. I did this while I was waiting to hear from clients today. Let me know what you think! Cheers!

Late Christmas

Hey there! So I completely forgot this past Christmas about a gift exchange deal that I signed up for. I got the most beautiful ORIGINAL painting in the mail from the gal I was supposed to have exchanged with and it made me sick with guilt. So today I attempted to rectify the situation by painting up this guy. It obviously isn't an acrylic painting, but I'm hoping she likes it and I hope you do to. Cheers!

Animated Short

Hi there! For anyone who's been following my blog for any length of time, you know that I've been working on a project called "Monomyth" for a few years now. Ordinarily I probably wouldn't stick to something for this long, but in this case it's a project that I really believe in. We've now decided to produce an animated short to introduce the world to one of the characters and hopefully generate some interest and a fan base.
I've been putting a team of artists together to help with the vis dev work, the matte painting, and the animation. Once we get a good team put together we'll launch a kickstarter campaign to fund it and hopefully have something to show for it in a year or so.
Anyway, here are a few sketches for some of the characters that will be in the short. I hope you enjoy them!

Cap and Bucky

Hey there everyone! I've been absolutely terrible at updating this thing so I'm going to be trying to make up for lost time over the next few days. We'll start out with an illustration I did yesterday of my favorite super hero and his faithful sidekick. My New Year's resolution is to be more like Captain America: stalwart, diligent, full of integrity and uncompromising when it comes to morals. Anyway, enjoy.
